How do we design teaching and learning in our classrooms to elicit metacognitive student learning, student self-direction, and a high level of student engagement in learning? Formative assessment instructional practices are effective because of how they foster agency in students' own learning. In this workshop high school teachers representing a range of content areas including math, science, social studies and ELA will share their journey of implementing formative assessment practices in the classroom. After a brief presentation, participants will work in small content-specific groups to revise a lesson that incorporates formative assessment strategies such as articulating lesson-level learning goals, identifying the success criteria for students to meet the learning goals, and peer feedback opportunities. These practices are relevant in both the remote and in-person learning environments.
Understand formative assessment as an instructional process that fosters engagement and student agency; Understand the role of explicit lesson-level learning goals and success criteria in formative assessment; Understand the importance and nature of a collaborative classroom culture in formative assessment as an instructional practice.
