There are many on-ramps to competency-based education and the vision for students who learn differently in our schools and classrooms includes meeting students where they are with a plan for supporting their move forward. This workshop begins with a reflection of the needs of students and teachers and the current supports available. Learning will include tools and processes that are immediately applicable in the participants’ settings.  Topics include building a culture of hope in the classroom and school, the purpose of competency education with students who learn differently, applying performance task design, accommodations, the student's voice, keeping students at the center, and more. Having space to focus specifically on the topics of students who learn differently and competency education implementation allows the participating group to focus on and solution-build around challenges.

Participants will increase understanding of the benefits of competency-based learning environments with students who learn differently; Participants will learn and explore the concept of competency and its deconstruction for students who learn differently; Participants will experience tools and processes that keep students at the center of learning and increase student voice and self-direction; Participants will examine and plan for a competency-based environment that meets the needs of all students.
