S2-U Are You Ready to Create the Next Generation of Competency-Based

Performance Assessments? K-12 Mathematics

Thursday, July 16

Session 2

1 -- 2:30 (ET)

Red Competency-Based Learning Orange Leadership & System Design & Structures

Competency-based assessments of deeper learning begin with clear, agreed-upon learning expectations – competencies. Competencies describing a deeper level of understanding than a single standard require assessments with intended DOK levels of 3 or 4 and learning pathways supporting all students to get there. First, you’ll create task-neutral performance scales to lay a foundation for ensuring that instruction, and a range of formative and performance assessments are aligned with content and work practices competencies. Next, you can design (or redesign) tasks that assess deeper content learning and also help students to reflect on and track their own progress over time.

Learn how to create task-neutral performance scales that align with competencies and offer a range of performance assessment options; Examine sample content-specific performance scales to explore the types of assessments that could be used by different teachers to assess the same competency; Incorporate content and work practices competencies into the design of performance tasks and consider implications for evidence-based grading.
