S2-Z Unpacking Our Invisible Backpacks:

Examining Systemic Racism, White Privilege, and

Becoming Anti-Racist Educators in the Age of Black Lives Matter

Friday, July 17

Session 2

1 -- 2:30 (ET)

blue Student-Centered and Personalized Learning orange Leadership & System Design & Structures

We are experiencing a watershed moment in this country even though issues of systemic racism, White privilege and inequity are “stamped” into our history. We ask: How do we work to address implicit bias and build toward anti-racist behaviors and practices? What is the role of educators in dismantling the systems that enable White privilege, patterns of marginality, and institutional racism to persist in our society? In a state such as New Hampshire in which many of us are White educators teaching in predominantly White schools, we know where we need to go. The question is, how do we get there? This session will introduce you to some beginning steps in the journey toward a just, culturally responsive, inclusive, and anti-racist classrooms. Come ready to reflect on and engage in challenging conversations about White privilege, and as Robin D’Angelo puts it, “White fragility,” implicit bias, and institutional racism through the lens of Whiteness and White educators’ responsibility to address racism in our schools, our classrooms, and in a structurally racist society.

Participants will build understanding of the issues and perspectives related to equity (identity, White privilege, implicit bias, racism, structural racism) in order to be more effective leaders in addressing and confronting racism in our work as educators. Participants will gain knowledge of some of the entry points for becoming more anti-racist educators through a sharing of Souhegan High School’s Equity Project work and other valuable resources.
