Use the writing process to prepare students to write far more effectively, build reading comprehension, deepen learning, and practice habits of mindfulness. Over 125 empirical studies show the effectiveness of the approach featured in this session (Self-regulated Strategy Development). This approach is meant to be woven into your existing writing instruction to strengthen what you already do well. Every district using these strategies has made significant gains on assessments, but even more in student love of writing and mindfulness. Strategies emphasized include teaching: formative assessment, key concepts, use of graphic organizers, analyzing models, think alouds, collaborative writing, mnemonics, goal setting, yoga, and use of self-talk while writing.
